Normally when I think about the songs of the 30's and 40's it conjures up images of musicals with songs about Easter bonnets and the clanging of trolleys. Nothing substantial or meaningful as the lyrics of today's deep and heart filled music.

That was until I read the short story Yellow Iris by Agatha Christie, I'm in a mystery kick right now. It's not the most gripping or enveloping of Poirot stories but it contains two songs that hit a chord with me, breaking my ignorance of what my Grandfather used to call "music with a good melody" (which music with rocks in it never had for him).

I never think of you
I couldn't say
For sure today
Whether your eyes were blue or gray
I've forgotten you
I never think of you.

I'm through
Thinking of you
I tell you I'm through
Thinking of you...
You... you... you...

I've forgotten you
I never think of you
Oh, what a lie
I shall think of you, think of you, think of you

Till I die...

The other song is at the very end of the story, I've already used too much of this page's space to write it down.

<infosponge> Yikes! I sort of wondered what a day without boobies or cute animal photos would be like. Now that I know, I'm just going to crawl into bed and hide and wait for Friday.
<3Suns> I would like to propose that the official mostemailed theme song be "Shock the Monkey" by Peter Gabriel. All those in favor?
<Lauren> I second that motion.

<Carol> My hearty apologies for non sequitur, but look what is today's Best Bet:
<Carol> Okay, there's 19 captions already and they're really funny, do I look like a loon if I go through putting "Great, Great, Great" on all of them?
<Lauren> Carol, try yoyo's technique of just putting a blank 'vote' in...
<guyPaulo> ...story.news.yahoo.com...
<3Suns> FREE SUSHI!!!
<Jmofwiw> There's just something intrinsicly funny about exploding whales.
...perp.com...
<guyPaulo> I want some photos of the whales guts up on Monday.
<yoyology> Thanks for the props, Lauren, but I actually got the "blank vote" idea from somebody else. I think it was either mypalmike or apple juice who I noticed doing it, and I liked the idea.
<Mort> Maybe you will have them tomorrow guyPaulo.
That exploding whale movie was one of the first movies I downloaded from the web.
<yoyology> obtuse: I checked out the Conversatron, and it's pretty cool, but it really made me nostalgic for the Usenet Oracle.
...cgi.cs.indiana.edu...
<infosponge> I used to do the Oracle all the time...that was such a great experiment in collaborative humor.
<yoyology> Relive those golden moments, baby.
mailto:oracle@cs.indiana.edu?subject=askme
<Starbug> Hey, there's a set of three photos begging to be captioned...
<Starbug> What? My HTML got stolen. It's at ...nice.purrsia.com...
<JulieK> I don't know any song earlier than the 90s because I am like 5
<yoyology> Mrrrrrow!
...story.news.yahoo.com...
<ElvisThePelvis> Hey! I will be out for two weeks without internet access. I am not dead, just resting. I'll be back sometime in Feb.
<yoyology> Elvis is pining for the fjords!
<yoyology> If we hadn't nailed him down, he would have bent the bars open with his little pecker, and voom!
<Mort> Have a fun perverted time Elvis.
<ElvisThePelvis> I'll be in New Zealand...drinking and driving on the wrong side of the road.
<3Suns> Pining for the fjords is better than pining for the fnords, 'tis God's own truth.
